Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
