The English along with Wales Pitted Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by rugby icons including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in the same group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This pairing echoes their memorable meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at Twickenham played a part in the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Key Pool Draws

The Irish and the Scots have likewise been drawn in a group once again, replicating the situation from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland secured a 36-14 win, with Scotland failing to progress to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from holders and world number one the Springboks before the showpiece match, assuming the Springboks top their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

If the groups conclude in line with the current global standings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from both the English and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Major Opener

Tournament hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster match aimed at jump-start the event.

Elsewhere, reigning champions the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and the Oaks. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
