They're Repeating in America What They Performed to Christianity

The Trump movement's most illuminating and defining instances – not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. During the period of several weeks, the nation's leader started showing everyone his designs for a gilded ballroom two times larger of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing portion to erect it.

He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of casualties from his cuts to USAID amounts to 600,000 and rising, and recently an analysis projected his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have risked – truly, no other president would have conceived – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the executive mansion in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of some of the richest Americans, nearly all of which have business with federal agencies.

We went from 'the humble will receive the planet' toward 'the humble will perish of cholera'

As disorienting as it is to watch the president attempt to overturn the traditional concept about democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment of Americans who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have observed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we grew up with into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of love into an icon of hate who endorses specifically the brutality that he denounced in scripture; this transformation occurred more slowly, over decades rather than months, however it is still disturbing in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for countless people.

A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself

So let me first describe the Jesus from my upbringing, because theoretically Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and because the quickly increasing segment of Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him because they identify as atheists or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of substantial value within Christian narrative.

It is unquestionably not the narrative of an authoritative monarch emerging; rather, a baby is born to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to evade secret police. The baby grows up in simple surroundings, a working carpenter; his teaching concerns compassion for others, specifically for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, shown by providing food and protecting. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to turn the other cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a means to educate the aggressor; his crime policy states that when someone steals your outer garment you should give the person your additional clothing as well.

The obvious and clear reality that the Jesus of the gospels requests a type of extreme compassion focused on the poor is what has always made the Christian faith somewhat of a provocative belief system: appealing to the masses, but owing to its inherent radicalness needing to be contained. In the fifties it was restrained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it essentially blessed current circumstances.

A Struggle for the Highest Within Us

So I have been heartened to witness the determined opposition to Trump emerge during the previous year. It has served as substantial consolation to help build the initiative that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged voters to show up in large quantities in the off-year elections. We will need to persist with it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners during all protests and calls to the best parts within national heritage.

We will be questioned ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you welcome them and receive them or reject?

The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, by relationship to the finest within national tradition, just as Christianity is optimally secured by reference to what makes it unique and beautiful, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In neither case does it imply feigning the most damaging of both America and Christianity never occurred; it means both meekness and conviction, a mixture that serious national faithful ought to accept.
