Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like typical physical horror, but inside Together lies a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the kind of problems that come with long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
